Have you ever stepped inside a building that once held the silent flicker of films and transformed into a vibrant stage for live performances? The Erith Playhouse stands right before you, a testament to the enduring spirit of the arts. This grand structure, initially born as the Oxford Cinema in 1913, was a beacon for entertainment in this part of London. It screened silent movies, drawing crowds to its simple brick box with a screen painted directly on the wall. But with the outbreak of World War II, the cinema’s role shifted dramatically, becoming a temporary home for furniture salvaged from bombed homes.

In the aftermath of the war, the need for entertainment soared, and a group of dedicated individuals formed the Erith Theatre Guild in 1943. Their shared passion led them on a journey to transform the old cinema into a space for live theater. With an incredible amount of sweat and dedication, they worked tirelessly to create a stage, dressing rooms, and a backstage area for productions. The transformation was a testament to their dedication, and in 1949, the Erith Playhouse officially opened its doors. It wasn’t easy. The Playhouse struggled in its early years, facing challenges with audience attendance and financial stability. But true to the spirit of its founders, the theater persisted, evolving, and steadily gaining popularity as it expanded and adapted.

In the 1960s, a new era dawned for the Playhouse. The building underwent a significant renovation, which saw improvements to its front-of-house facilities, including an enlarged foyer and the addition of a refreshment area. This period also marked a change in the Playhouse’s identity. It moved away from solely showcasing works by affiliated societies and began presenting its own productions. Though its core character remained, the theater embraced a new chapter, demonstrating its ability to adapt to the changing landscape of the arts. The Playhouse became a symbol of community spirit and creativity. It was (and still is) a place where local performers could hone their skills and audiences could gather to witness their talent. The Playhouse stands as a testament to the enduring power of the arts, a place where the magic of live theatre continues to unfold, echoing the stories of the past and welcoming those who are ready to experience the thrill of the present.
