Erhvervsstyrelsen was formed on January 1 2012. It was created by merging Erhvervs- og Selskabsstyrelsen. Parts of Erhvervs- og Byggestyrelsen and It- og Telestyrelsen also joined. This merger created a central hub for business-related tasks.
Before 2012 Erhvervs- og Selskabsstyrelsen handled company matters. It oversaw businesses and liberal professions. It also managed the Central Business Register or CVR. This register recorded all Danish companies. In 1918 it started as Aktieselskabsregisteret due to a new law about joint-stock companies. The registry was needed to keep track of all Danish companies. In 1974 it also began registering private limited companies.
A reform in 1987/1988 changed things. The agency took over tasks from the Ministry of Industry. Aktieselskabsregisteret became Erhvervs- og Selskabsstyrelsen. It managed areas like trade law and opening hours. The head of the agency was renamed from “overregistrator” to “direktør”. The Central Business Register CVR was created in 1999. It collected data on 275000 Danish firms for the first time.
Erhvervsstyrelsen deals with business development and regulation. It also handles company registration. Katrine Winding replaced Betina Hagerup as director on November 1 2017. From 2011 to 2015 it also regulated telecom and internet. These tasks moved to the Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate in 2015.
In 2015, the agency gained planning tasks. These came from the Ministry of Environment and Food. This included planning laws and regulations for summerhouses. Social enterprises also moved from the Ministry of Social Affairs to Erhvervsstyrelsen. Some tasks came from the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs.
Erhvervsstyrelsen gave up some areas to the Ministry of Energy. These included telecom and internet regulation. It also included radio and TV broadcasting.
In January 2021 Erhvervsstyrelsen reported a data breach. Over 150000 CPR numbers were leaked. The agency mistakenly gave API access to sensitive data. This data was exposed for 48 hours. The agency shut down cvr.dk to fix the issue. The case was handed to the Data Protection Agency. The agency asked for details about the breach and prevention methods. A company alerted Erhvervsstyrelsen about the problem. A week later, they issued a press release.
Today Erhvervsstyrelsen continues its work. It shapes business conditions in Denmark. The ministry aims to create good conditions for Danish businesses. It focuses on green transition and the financial sector. It also looks at consumer affairs and life science. Global strategy and technological development are key too.
