This unassuming park was once known as Cortland and Oakley Park. It was established in 1964, on land owned by the Chicago Board of Education. Initially, the park was a simple, grassy space with a concrete slab and a couple of swings. It was a place for kids to run around and enjoy the fresh air. But then, things changed. In 1974, as part of a city-wide program to get creative with park names, this park was transformed into Daisy Park, focusing on the beauty of nature. Then in 1989, a community organization asked the park to rename the space for William J. Ehrler Jr., a local community leader who lived from 1944 to 1988. Ehrler was passionate about his community. He served as president of the Bucktown Community Organization, chaired the Holstein Park Advisory Council, and even helped run the Bucktown Artsfest, a celebration of local talent. Following this, the park was renamed Ehrler Park in his honor. It’s a quiet tribute to a man who loved his community and whose memory continues to inspire. Since then, the park has been through a lot, including the addition of a brand-new playground in the early ’90s and a complete renovation project in 2002.
