Picture this The Eremitage Palace stands majestically before you. It’s more than just a building. It’s a time capsule a testament to royal extravagance and ingenious design. Built in 1736 by Christian VI this Baroque masterpiece was originally a hunting lodge. The King used it for rest and lavish feasts after hunts.

The Eremitage Palace wasn’t just any hunting lodge. It boasted a truly unique feature a remarkable table mechanism. This amazing contraption allowed a fully set dining table to be raised from the kitchen below. The King and his select guests could dine en ermitage in solitude without servants. Imagine the spectacle the table rising from the floor laden with food wine and delicacies. This ingenious system sadly disappeared in the late 1700s due to constant mechanical issues.

But the stories of the Eremitage Palace go far beyond its mechanical marvels. It was central to royal hunts particularly the dramatic par force hunts. These intense hunts involved pursuing stags until exhaustion. The King followed the hunt from the palace windows. He then gave the coup de grace ending the stag’s life a symbolic display of his absolute power.

Later the Eremitage Palace became a site for significant political events. King Frederik VII signed the Danish constitution here in 1849 ending absolute monarchy. Five years later it hosted the first large celebration of the constitution drawing 30000 people.

The palace has undergone extensive renovations. The exterior was meticulously restored from 1979 to 1991. From 2009 to 2013 the interior restoration focused on recreating the original 1700s color scheme. Today Queen Margrethe II still uses the palace for official lunches.

So as you stand here before the Eremitage Palace remember its rich history. From its inventive table mechanism to its role in pivotal historical moments. It stands as a captivating blend of royal indulgence engineering prowess and political significance. A true testament to Denmark’s royal past.
