A solitary tower pierces the sky. This is the Érdi minaret a testament to Budapest’s rich Ottoman past. It stands proudly near the Danube’s dam a silent sentinel guarding a trace of an ancient Roman road.

The Érdi minaret is one of only three Ottoman-era minarets left in Hungary. Its 23-meter height is a striking feature. Built in the 17th century it once formed part of a vibrant mosque a place of worship for Ottoman Muslims. The call to prayer the Adhan echoed from this very spot. Sadly the mosque itself is gone. Only the Érdi minaret remains.

Historians like József Molnár have left descriptions of the mosque. He paints a picture of a rectangular building. Its walls were adorned with colourful windows. Rich carpets covered the floors. A Mihrab a prayer niche pointed towards Mecca. A wooden-barred balcony provided access to the Érdi minaret for the muezzin the crier who called the faithful to prayer.

A copy of the mosque’s Mihrab now stands near the Érdi minaret. This replica made from iron-reinforced concrete offers a glimpse into the mosque’s lost grandeur. The original Mihrab was made of stone.

The Érdi minaret’s architecture is fascinating. It has a cylindrical base. A conical transition leads to a polygonal upper part. The middle and top sections are modern reconstructions. The entrance is high up. It was originally accessed from the mosque’s balcony.

Climb the Érdi minaret if you can. From the top a breathtaking panorama awaits you. You will see Érd-Ófalu the Danube River and Beliczay Island. It is a panoramic view of nature and history. The Érdi minaret is a beacon of the past. It is a monument to a bygone era a reminder of Hungary’s diverse heritage. The Érdi minaret invites you to reflect on its history and its significance.
