Nestled in Budapest’s 10th district, the Erdélyi Gyülekezet whispers tales of resilience and faith. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Transylvanian Hungarian community. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet’s story begins in the 1970s and 80s with Reverend Géza Németh. He spearheaded a mission to aid refugees, a mission that blossomed into this unique congregation in 1990. Initially, this support was offered in a small basement near Moszkva tér, later moving to a larger church in Rákosszentmihály. This aid, from clothing and food to housing and jobs, was a lifeline for thousands. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet found its permanent home in 1992, on the grounds of a former Soviet barracks near Örs vezér tere. This place, christened Reménység Szigete, or “Island of Hope”, has become a sanctuary. It has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the years. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet maintains a vibrant spiritual life, enriched by Transylvanian liturgical practices. Daily morning and midday prayers, along with evening services on Wednesdays, provide spiritual sustenance. The church truly comes alive on Sundays at 10 am with its main service, reflecting the rich liturgical traditions of Transylvania. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet also hosts special events. The all-night vigil on Holy Saturday is a profound experience. The “Meeting of Transylvanians Living in Hungary”, held on the second Sunday after Easter, is a vibrant celebration of community. The “Day of the Dead of Transylvania” on November 1st offers a poignant space for remembrance. The church also continues its commitment to those in need. The Reménység Szigete houses a facility that provides affordable accommodation, primarily for groups from beyond the borders, especially families of pastors. Beyond its spiritual role, the Erdélyi Gyülekezet actively engages in cultural and charitable work. The annual Németh Géza Memorial Conference, usually held around his birthday in late May or early June, is a key event. The Reménység Szigete also hosts a vibrant summer program, adding to the dynamic atmosphere of this remarkable community. The Erdélyi Gyülekezet stands as a symbol of hope and resilience.
