Journey with me back to the Gallo-Roman era. Imagine a small settlement nestled against a north-facing cliff overlooking the Oise River. This is the birthplace of Éragny. The name itself, possibly derived from “Heriniacus” or “Areniacus,” hints at its ancient origins. Éragny remained a modest village for centuries, its lifeblood drawn from the river and the fertile land. Éragny’s story takes a turn in 1564 with the arrival of Jean d’Alesso, who purchased the seigneury. His family’s influence shaped Éragny, their legacy woven into the very fabric of the town. Their descendants held the seigneury until the French Revolution, when it was confiscated. The d’Alesso family’s coat of arms, featuring a gold saltire, silver snails, and an azure background, even inspired Éragny’s modern emblem. In the 19th century, Éragny welcomed a notable resident: Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, author of “Paul et Virginie.” A disciple of Rousseau, Saint-Pierre found solace in Éragny’s tranquil setting, residing in the former presbytery until his death in 1814. While the arrival of the railroad brought industry and growth with the opening of a limestone quarry, Éragny retained its agricultural character. By the late 19th century, it was still a small community of under 500 inhabitants. The 20th century ushered in significant transformation. The establishment of a paper mill marked Éragny’s first major industrial activity. This mill, the first in the new business zone, became a cornerstone of the local economy. Its legacy lives on in the “Salle des Calandres,” a beautifully repurposed paper press room now used for exhibitions and events. The most dramatic change came with the development of the Cergy-Pontoise new town in the late 1960s. Éragny, once a quiet village, blossomed into a bustling town. New neighborhoods sprang up on the plateau, reshaping Éragny’s landscape and expanding its population. Today, Éragny boasts a unique blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. The village center, with its historic buildings and winding streets, coexists with bustling commercial districts. Promenades along the Oise, natural spaces on the plateau, and cultural events add to Éragny’s vibrant character. Éragny, a town forged from ancient settlements and shaped by centuries of change, continues to thrive.
