Can a village vanish? Almost. Épiais-lès-Louvres, a quaint village near Paris, nearly met this fate. This small commune in the Val-d’Oise department, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Charles de Gaulle Airport, has a history as rich as the fields that once defined it. Épiais-lès-Louvres whispers tales of ancient Gaulish settlements. These vestiges, unearthed within the commune’s boundaries, confirm its long history. The name itself, Épiais-lès-Louvres, hints at its agricultural past. It likely derives from the Latin “spicarium,” a building for storing grain. Under the Ancien Régime, Épiais-lès-Louvres belonged to the chapter of the Church of Paris. Farming was the lifeblood of this village. Wheat and beet crops painted the landscape. Épiais-lès-Louvres boasted three significant farms. The Manoir farm, a 17th-century structure, later became a hotel and restaurant. Its courtyard, accessed through a timber-ceilinged porch, and the square dovecote remain. The Chapitre farm, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, transitioned from a working farm to a private residence. It stands proudly behind the hosanna cross at the village’s edge. Lastly, the “Croix” farm, also built around the 17th and 18th centuries, sits near the distillery path. Remarkably, it’s the only one still operating today. Épiais-lès-Louvres wasn’t always so quiet. Before 1960, it had a grocery store and a wine shop. After they closed, traveling merchants filled the void. A bustling fair enlivened the village every second Sunday of September. A single building housed both the town hall and a one-room school, which closed in 1982. The teacher also lived there. The roar of progress brought change. With the construction of Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport in the 1960s, Épiais-lès-Louvres faced expropriation, not once, but twice. Yet, this small village perseveres, a testament to resilience. Its story, etched in the stones of its farmhouses and whispered in the rustling fields, continues to be told. Épiais-lès-Louvres remains a hidden gem, a quiet reminder of a simpler time.
