Can a warehouse become a city? Here at the Entrepôt Macdonald, that’s exactly what happened. This colossal structure, stretching an astounding 617 meters along Boulevard Macdonald, was once Europe’s largest building. It served as a freight warehouse, a concrete behemoth designed by Marcel Forest and completed in 1970. Imagine the activity, the constant hum of machinery and workers within these walls. The Entrepôt Macdonald held a unique place in Paris, tucked away in the 19th arrondissement. Its immense roof, spanning over 4.5 hectares, even became a parking lot for impounded cars. But by the turn of the century, Paris was changing. The city began focusing on revitalizing its industrial edges. In 2006, the Entrepôt Macdonald was put up for sale, presenting an incredible opportunity for urban renewal. The city, in partnership with developers, acquired the property. Rem Koolhaas and Floris Alkemade of OMA crafted a masterplan. Their vision? Not demolition, but transformation. The masterplan mandated preserving Forest’s original first floor, recognizing its importance to the project’s identity. Above this base, a new, stratified structure would rise, layers of glass and mineral materials adding a modern touch. The project began in 2010. Fifteen architects were tasked with designing different sections, a collaborative effort of unprecedented scale. The existing structure was reinforced, and new stories were added. The Entrepôt Macdonald effectively doubled in height. It was a complex undertaking, but the results are stunning. Today, the Entrepôt Macdonald is a bustling mix of residential units, offices, shops, and public amenities. A tram line even cuts through the building, connecting it to the heart of Paris. The north facade, facing Boulevard Macdonald, retains Forest’s original concrete grille design. Above it, a vibrant tapestry of architectural styles unfolds, a testament to the collaboration of numerous architects. Each section has its own distinct character, a unique expression of creativity within the larger framework. The Entrepôt Macdonald is a true marvel of urban regeneration. It stands as a testament to the power of vision and collaboration, transforming a once-industrial warehouse into a thriving urban center.
