Remember José Ramírez Pérez? He left a lasting mark on Montevideo. Today we’re standing at Ensenada de Ramírez. It is named after his old saladero. A saladero was an establishment for the production of salted meat.

Playa Ramírez is more than just a beach. It’s a place with a past. In the early 20th century, it was Montevideo’s favorite beach. People flocked here. They enjoyed the sun and the sea.

Ensenada de Ramírez is near Parque Rodó. It is also close to the iconic Casino Parque Hotel. Today, the hotel is the administrative headquarters of Mercosur. Mercosur is a South American trade bloc.

Facing the Ensenada de Ramírez is the Edificio Mercosur. You can also find the monument to Confucius nearby. The Faculty of Engineering and the Ramón Collazo Summer Theater are also close.

This area has changed over time. Playa Ramírez used to be the fourth beach east of Montevideo’s port. Playa del Gas was the first. Playa Patricios and Playa Santa Ana were in between. Sadly, they disappeared when the Rambla Sur was built.

Now, Playa Ramírez is the second beach east of the port. Its waters and sand are closely monitored. This is because of its proximity to the port. There have been debates about whether it’s safe for swimming.

People of all ages visit Ensenada de Ramírez. Fishing is a popular activity here. You’ll often see anglers on the piers. They are hoping to catch white croaker, silverside, or sardines.

Every February 2nd, Playa Ramírez hosts the religious festival of Iemanjá. The festival fills the beach with color and devotion. Iemanjá is a water spirit.

Whether you’re here to fish, celebrate, or simply relax, Ensenada de Ramírez offers something for everyone. It connects us to Montevideo’s past. It also gives us a place to enjoy the present. So take a moment to appreciate this lively spot. It is a place where history and culture meet the sea.
