Ready to explore a place rich in history? English Martyrs Church stands here a testament to faith and resilience.

English Martyrs Church has a story that stretches back to the 19th century. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate founded the church. They were invited to Tower Hill by Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman. Their mission was to serve the local Catholic community.

In 1865 the Oblates arrived. They started work on a temporary church and school. By 1866 the temporary church was opened by Cardinal Henry Manning. From 1870 to 1872 a new building was constructed. It housed a school on the ground floor and a chapel above.

The foundation stone for English Martyrs Church was laid in 1873. Cardinal Manning did the honors. E. W. Pugin designed it but his death in 1875 caused delays. His brothers finished the work based on his designs. The church finally opened in 1876. The construction cost was around £10,000.

Let’s talk about some interesting developments. In 1881 the presbytery was rebuilt. The Carthusians funded it to honor the Carthusian Martyrs of London. These martyrs were executed at Tower Hill in 1535. In the 1890s the school was enlarged. This led to a new sacristy being built in the presbytery.

English Martyrs Church faced a major challenge in 1940. During World War II a 500 kg bomb struck the church. Fortunately it didn’t explode. However it caused significant damage. It damaged the side wall and destroyed the pulpit. In 1970 the school was moved to St Mark Street. Its old site became a community center. Refurbishment work was done in 1991. The roof was repaired and the interior repainted in 2007.

The history of English Martyrs Church is intertwined with the Tower of London. The Tower was once surrounded by religious foundations. These foundations were suppressed during the Reformation. The Tower became a place of imprisonment and execution for Catholics. Tower Hill became a place of Catholic interest because of the English Martyrs. St Thomas More and St John Fisher were executed here. They were canonized in 1935.

English Martyrs Church also played a role in helping German Catholics. German Catholics settled in the Tower area in the 1850s. They needed a place of worship. The Oblates took on this mission. They served the German community until 1876.

Finances were always a challenge for English Martyrs Church. The parish faced mounting debts. Help came from the Carthusian Monastery. They donated money to rebuild the presbytery.

English Martyrs Church is a testament to faith and community. It has overcome many challenges. It continues to serve as a place of worship. It also stands as a reminder of the English Martyrs. They gave their lives for their faith. The church’s location attracts growing interest. It stands as a beacon of hope in Tower Hill.
