Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Englischer Pavillon. Right here in the heart of Pillnitz’s enchanting Schlosspark.

This exquisite building the Englischer Pavillon boasts a rich history. It was built between 1778 and 1781. King Friedrich August himself frequented this very spot. He used it for a unique purpose. He studied botanical books and plant collections here. Think of it a royal library and botanical laboratory all in one.

The Englischer Pavillon’s design is breathtaking. It’s modeled after a Roman temple. Specifically Bramante’s Tempietto. This small circular temple is in Rome. The Englischer Pavillon features a colonnade. It has an upper walkway. A crowning dome completes the structure. It’s a stunning example of early Classicist architecture with late Baroque influences. The interior is equally impressive. Three oval rooms are arranged one above the other. The ground floor room is stunning. It has elegant gray-green stucco marble.

The upper floor served as a fascinating space. It was an insect and plant cabinet. Jacob Friedrich a botanical court and cabinet painter decorated it. He painted insects and butterflies. It’s a glimpse into the scientific curiosity of the time.

The Englischer Pavillon’s story doesn’t end there. Around 1780 plant painters meticulously documented 1000 special plants. They created ten precious volumes called the “Pillnitzer Centurien”. These books detail the extensive royal plant collections. The king systematically developed these collections right here in Pillnitz. These rare books offer insights into the botanical world of the late 18th century.

The Englischer Pavillon is a treasure. It’s more than a pretty building. It’s a window into the past. It shows a king’s passion for botany. It reveals the artistry of skilled painters. It is a true testament to the rich cultural heritage of Saxony. Imagine King Friedrich August here surrounded by the beauty of his plant collections and the artistry of the painted insects. What a fascinating story. This is the Englischer Pavillon. Enjoy the rest of your visit.
