How about a story of faith that has moved forward for over a century? I am talking about Englewood United Methodist Church. This church stands as a testament to community, resilience, and spiritual dedication in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood.

Englewood United Methodist Church’s story began in 1887. The Simon Peffley family wanted to create a church. They had moved from the Phillipsburg area to Englewood, then known as Harrisburg. United Brethren Church members, they desired a local church. In 1888, twelve people signed a charter in the Peffley’s dining room. Early meetings occurred in John Nill Hall. It was located at the northwest corner of Routes 40 and 48.

The small group quickly planned a dedicated church building. Christian Herr donated the land. He also provided foundation stones, timber, and money. Herr’s contributions allowed construction to begin. The church was built on the corner of Walnut and Herr Streets. The new church was dedicated in 1889.

The church relied on seminary students for pastoral leadership. Students came from Bonebrake Seminary. This seminary is now United Theological Seminary in Dayton. They traveled by bicycle or train. They stayed with church families for the weekend. This arrangement forged a lasting relationship. The Englewood United Methodist Church became a teaching church.

Over the years, the church evolved. In 1915, they remodeled the building. Heating and lighting were installed. A basement was added. The United Brethren Church merged with the Evangelical Church in 1944. An education unit was completed in 1956. A new sanctuary was dedicated on January 27, 1967. It featured a stained-glass window of Jesus. His arms were outstretched. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged again. It became Englewood United Methodist Church.

The original church building was demolished in 1974. But its bell was saved. The bell now sits near the Walnut Street entrance. The sanctuary was remodeled in 2003. This renovation improved visibility for everyone.

Reverend George L. Sidwell was the longest-serving pastor. He served from 1971 to 1989. Norman Moxley became the pastor in 2022.

In 2013, Englewood United Methodist Church celebrated its 125th anniversary. The theme was “Faith Moving Forward.” It reflected the church’s ongoing mission. The mission is to share the Good News. United Methodists strive for perfection. They honor their history. They also look forward to God’s future direction. They live out their faith in meaningful ways. Recently, they celebrated 130 years in ministry.

Today, Englewood United Methodist Church continues its mission. It nurtures a welcoming community. It encourages others to follow God. The church is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ. It strives to transform Chicago and the world.

The story of Englewood United Methodist Church shows enduring faith. It reveals commitment and community spirit. It stands as a beacon of hope in Englewood.
