Built on the former Royal Small Arms Factory land Enfield Island Village is a unique place. It’s a modern housing development a vibrant community built on a site with a rich history. Before April 1994 this area was actually part of Essex. It only became part of the London Borough of Enfield when the housing development was completed.

Imagine the transformation. A once-busy arms factory is now home to over 1300 houses and flats. Think about the lives that have unfolded here. Families moved in. They made this place their own. They built lives on land once dedicated to making weapons.

The development wasn’t without controversy. Friends of the Earth and the Enfield Lock Action Group campaigned against it. Concerns about contamination lingered. But extensive environmental reports confirmed the site was safe. The development proceeded anyway supported by the European Union and the Enfield Enterprise Agency. Enfield Island Village became a model brownfield regeneration project.

Today Enfield Island Village boasts a central parkland a small shopping centre and even its own GP and primary school. A testament to its success. The development’s flood plain location was addressed through flood defenses. The risk of flooding is now lower than in the surrounding areas.

Residents manage much of life on the island through the Enfield Island Village Trust. The Trust maintains the common areas. They enforce covenants ensuring the development’s upkeep. It’s a self-sufficient community. A shining example of what can be achieved.

The Enfield Island Village story is one of transformation. It’s a story of change. It shows how land can be repurposed. How a community can thrive on a site once dedicated to something completely different. It is a modern community with a rich history waiting to be explored.
