Built between June 1845 and April 1846, Enderby House stands before you, a testament to a time when whaling and rope making were at their peak. It was home to Charles Enderby, a descendant of a family deeply rooted in the whaling industry. The Enderby family, known for Samuel Enderby & Sons, were pioneers in Antarctic exploration and prominent figures in the world of whaling.

Charles, however, decided to diversify the family business. In 1830, the Enderby brothers, including Charles, established the Enderby Hemp and Rope Works nearby. This factory, a source of employment for over 250 people, unfortunately met a tragic end in 1845 when a devastating fire engulfed it.

It was during the factory’s reconstruction that Charles, perhaps seeking solace or a fresh start, built Enderby House. He resided here until 1849 when financial troubles forced him to put both the house and the factory site up for sale. The property remained unsold until 1857 when it was purchased by Glass, Elliot & Co., a company involved in the groundbreaking endeavor of laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable.

From that point onward, Enderby House became intertwined with the history of telecommunications, serving various functions for companies that shaped the world’s connection. Though no longer involved with the Enderby family, the house stands as a reminder of their legacy – a blend of maritime ventures, industrial ambitions, and the resilience of those who came before.
