Picture this. You are standing before a remnant of Paris’s ancient past. The Enceinte de Philippe-Auguste. Its stones whisper tales of sieges and triumphs. This imposing wall is not just a boundary. It’s a time capsule.

The Enceinte de Philippe-Auguste is a monumental achievement. Built between 1190 and 1209 it encircled the medieval city. King Philip II Augustus ordered its construction. He wanted to protect Paris during his absence on the Third Crusade. The wall is more than just a defense. It represents a pivotal moment in Paris’s development. It marked the city’s boundaries. The city grew within these walls.

Now imagine yourself a Parisian in 1200. You live within these walls. You see the imposing stonework every day. You know the strategic placement of its towers. They are a symbol of security. They are a testament to your city’s strength. These towers weren’t just pretty additions. They were vital defensive positions. Each one meticulously placed for optimal protection. They were also taller than you might imagine. Some reached heights of 11 to 12 meters. They were capable of withstanding powerful attacks.

Consider the sheer scale of this project. The Enceinte de Philippe-Auguste stretched for nearly 5100 meters. It enclosed an area of 253 hectares. It is the second medieval enclosure. More impressively its exact layout is still known. Unlike many other walls from that era the Enceinte has left numerous visible remains. You are lucky to see one of them today.

One of the best-preserved sections sits in the Marais district. It’s located in the Jardins Saint-Paul. This remarkable section is approximately 60 meters long. It even features two towers. One stands on Rue des Jardins Saint-Paul. The other Montgomery’s Tower is located at the corner of Rue Charlemagne. Examine the stones closely. You might see mason’s marks. These marks identified the workers who built the wall. They were paid by the job. Their handiwork stands as a testament to their skill and endurance.

The Enceinte de Philippe-Auguste’s survival is also a remarkable story. Parts were incorporated into later buildings. A convent and later infantry barracks helped protect sections of the wall. The sections you see today are from careful restoration work. These surviving parts of the wall offer a glimpse into the past. They help us understand Paris’s rich and layered history. They are tangible links to a time when walls defined a city. This wall remains a powerful reminder of Paris’s resilience. It stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. Remember as you walk away the Enceinte de Philippe-Auguste’s history is woven into the very fabric of Paris.
