EnBW’s headquarters are here in Karlsruhe. The company impacts our daily lives. It powers homes businesses and industries throughout Baden-Württemberg and beyond. EnBW ensures that the lights stay on and our devices remain charged.
EnBW came to life on January 1 1997. It happened through the fusion of Badenwerk AG and Energie-Versorgung Schwaben AG. Later Neckarwerke Stuttgart AG joined on October 1 2003. These mergers created the foundation for the energy giant we see today.
Frank Mastiaux became CEO of EnBW in March 2012. He launched a strategic shift towards renewable energy. The goal was ambitious. EnBW aimed to increase renewable energy sources from 12% to 40% by 2020. They actually reached 40.1% in 2021.
Wind power became a key part of EnBW’s strategy. The company is a leading wind farm developer and operator in Germany. EnBW operates both onshore and offshore wind farms. They harness the power of the wind to generate clean energy.
EnBW plans to invest over 5 billion Euros between 2020 and 2025. This investment will further expand renewable energy generation. The goal is to operate onshore and offshore wind farms. These will have a total capacity of at least 4000 MW.
EnBW’s first offshore wind farm was EnBW Baltic 1. It went into operation in 2011. It has 21 wind turbines in the Baltic Sea. EnBW Baltic 2 followed in early summer 2015. It has 80 turbines. In early 2020 EnBW Hohe See and Albatros wind farms went into operation in the North Sea. They have 87 turbines and 609 MW capacity.
EnBW has expanded its activities beyond wind power. This includes electric mobility photovoltaics and distributed energy generation. EnBW has collaborated with Tank & Rast since March 2017. They are expanding charging points for electric vehicles along German autobahns.
EnBW provides the EnBW mobility+ app. It combines a charging point locator with payment options. It covers Germany Austria Switzerland France Italy and the Netherlands. EnBW has the largest charging network spanning Germany Austria and Switzerland.
EnBW also aims to expand photovoltaic generating capacity to 1200 MWp by 2025. They are building Germany’s largest unsubsidized solar farm in Brandenburg. In March 2018 EnBW acquired Senec a manufacturer of home solar battery storage systems.
EnBW announced in March 2023 that it intends to end coal usage by 2028. This shows a commitment to a cleaner energy future.
EnBW’s shareholders include NECKARPRI-Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH and Oberschwäbische Elektrizitätswerke. Each holds a 46.75% ownership interest. EnBW has around 5.5 million customers. It is the third-largest energy company in Germany. In 2022 EnBW generated revenue of 56.0 billion Euros. EnBW continues to shape the energy landscape. They strive for a sustainable future.
