Have you ever wondered about the hidden stories behind the everyday landmarks of a city? The Empire Masonic Lodge Plaque is a prime example. It stands silently by the side of the road, seemingly unassuming at first glance, but holds within it a rich history that speaks volumes about the community around it. The plaque, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Empire Masonic Lodge No. 586, serves as a portal to a time when settlers established the Empire community. Founded in the late 1800s, Empire was once a bustling hub with a school, post office, churches, stores, and a cotton gin. This plaque narrates the journey of the lodge, from its humble beginnings in Empire to its enduring presence in Nevada. The lodge was formed by 25 master masons who yearned for a Masonic lodge to unite the Empire community. It was held in Empire College on the Saturdays before full moons. In 1888, as Empire began to decline, the lodge moved to the town of Nevada. The members constructed a two-story wooden building on Warren Street, a monument to their dedication. The lodge’s story continues through the trials of a powerful tornado in 1927, which devastated Nevada, including the lodge’s building. Yet, the lodge persevered, a testament to the resilience of its members. They rebuilt their lodge, using donations from fellow lodges and a loan, ensuring its continued existence. The lodge then moved to a new building in 1972, continuing to be a cornerstone of the community. It adopted Bear Creek Cemetery, a remaining vestige of the old Empire settlement. The lodge also extended their support to various community initiatives. This plaque is a reminder that the Empire Masonic Lodge has long been a beacon of community spirit, a symbol of hope, and a testament to the strength of human connection. As you stand before this plaque, you’re not just looking at a piece of metal; you’re witnessing a living legacy, a symbol of history, community, and resilience.
