Built of sandstone the Empfangsgebaude of Dresden Neustadt station stands proudly. Its imposing presence greets travelers arriving at this significant railway hub. Designed by the architectural duo Otto Peters and Osmar Durich the Empfangsgebaude was completed in 1901. It replaced the older Leipziger Bahnhof and Schlesischer Bahnhof. Its grand design reflects its importance as a major transportation center. The Empfangsgebaude’s symmetrical facade is striking. Large round-arched windows and columns create a sense of grandeur. The two side wings are simpler in design contrasting with the central hall’s magnificence. Construction required a massive amount of sandstone 2040 cubic meters to be exact.
Inside the Empfangsgebaude the central reception hall is breathtaking. It is 52 meters wide 30 meters long and 17 meters high. A three-part vaulted ceiling adds to its elegance. Skylights and a glass pyramid-shaped roof provide ample natural light. The ceilings and walls are adorned with the coats of arms of the Kingdom of Saxony and the city of Dresden. Beautiful paintings further enhance the hall’s beauty.
Originally ticket counters were situated between the two main portals. Opposite was the baggage handling area. Today food stalls and a travel center occupy this space. Shops selling travel supplies are also present. The southwest wing housed first and second-class waiting rooms a ladies’ room and a dining room. Now a discount supermarket and a fast-food restaurant are located there. The northeast wing contained the princely apartments. These rooms including a reception salon and several other rooms are now used for restaurants.
A commemorative plaque on the building’s outer wall honors Theodor Kunz. He was the builder of the first German long-distance railway line between Leipzig and Dresden. The Empfangsgebaude has undergone renovations including energy-efficiency measures and the creation of a new waiting area.
