On a clear Sunday morning in Mesquite, Texas, something unexpected happened at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church. Instead of the usual sounds of hymns and sermons, the roar of a tornado echoed through the air. This is the story of how the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, a beacon of faith since 1940, faced an unexpected challenge. The Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, nestled in Mesquite, has a rich history. From its humble beginnings in 1940 with a simple roof built by Reverend Hart to its current spacious campus, the church has seen tremendous growth. It moved from South Dallas to Oak Cliff and finally settled in Mesquite in 1997. The tornado, an EF-0, ripped through Mesquite on a Saturday, right before choir practice was scheduled to begin. The swirling winds tore at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, ripping off part of its roof. Metal debris flew onto nearby Interstate 635. Bricks were torn from the walls, a billboard was mangled, and the maintenance building suffered damage. Pastor Chad Flowers later joked about their “new, unanticipated skylight.” Despite the damage and the power outage that forced the cancellation of Sunday services, the spirit of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church remained unbroken. Church members, unable to gather in their beloved building, found other ways to worship. Small groups formed throughout Mesquite, their faith unshaken by the storm. Richard Flowers, senior pastor of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, spoke of the resilience of his congregation. He reminded everyone that the church is more than just a building. It is the people who make up the church. And those people, he said, are strong. The Emmanuel Pentecostal Church has always been a place of strength and growth. From its early days under Reverend Lutrick with tent revivals to the decades of growth under Reverend Paul Hosch, the church has continuously served its community. The move to Mesquite and the construction of the new sanctuary under Richard Flowers further solidified its place as a center of faith. While the estimated three to six months of repairs seemed daunting, the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church knew it would overcome this obstacle. Their faith, like their building, would be restored. They planned to hold services in the sanctuary again as soon as Wednesday, a testament to their unwavering spirit.
