The first church building took years to be built, and the stones were donated by the town founders. It became a bustling hub for the community, hosting parties, teas and picnics. In 1924, tragedy struck when the old church was destroyed by a fire. The cause is still a mystery. But the congregation didn’t give up. Less than three years later, the “new” church, designed by noted architect John Neal Tilton, was completed. The church is considered one of the most beautiful in the Chicago area and has even made its way onto the silver screen. It was featured in the movie “While You Were Sleeping,” where it served as the backdrop for a heartwarming wedding scene. As you admire the stained glass, you may notice that the church is a blend of old and new. The windows were installed decades after the church was built and feature not only biblical themes but also modern figures, including composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.
