The church we see today is actually the second Emmanuel Church to grace this spot. The first, a more modest structure, was built in 1874. However, West Hampstead was booming in the late 19th century. It wasn’t long before the congregation outgrew their quaint little church. The original Emmanuel Church was eventually demolished in 1901, making way for the grander edifice we see today. Look closely at the font near the entrance. It was a gift in 1898, amusingly donated by “the children of the parish”. Imagine those poor children, likely deprived of sweets and toys to fund this ornate piece of church history.
