A gift of £300,000. That’s how Emmanuel Church acquired its Marsham Street property. Imagine the excitement the congregation must have felt.
Emmanuel Church in London isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant testament to faith and community. Founded initially at St Peter’s Church in the West End. It started with a humble gathering of 70 people.
Its journey has been remarkable. In 1991 Chua Wee Hian became senior pastor. Dr John Stott even preached there. Seven years later the Charismatic Renewal Movement profoundly impacted the church. It became a Word and Spirit church. A transforming discipleship and leadership model was introduced. All this thanks to input from Trinity Christian Centre in Singapore.
The acquisition of the Marsham Street property in 1997 was a monumental achievement. It cost £1.2 million. A visitor’s generous gift and the church’s community contributions made it possible. The church’s growth continued. Michael Ross-Watson became pastor in 2000. Emmanuel Chinese Church was planted in 2002 with Ps Bobby Sung as its first senior pastor. Naomi Dowdy became presiding apostle in 2005. Emmanuel Edgware was planted in 2007. It was formerly known as Emmanuel North West.
The church’s leadership saw changes over the years. Peter Loo became senior pastor in 2008. Colin Williams became associate pastor in 2010. Doreen Teh was appointed pastor in 2014. Bruce Atkinson joined as associate pastor in 2019. Richard Hindley became bi-vocational pastor in 2023. The Emmanuel Edgware Church building was purchased in 2015.
Emmanuel Church stands as a beacon of faith. Its story is one of growth. It’s a story of generous giving and dedicated leadership. It’s a reminder that even small beginnings can lead to remarkable achievements. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. So as you stand here. Reflect on its rich history. Imagine the lives touched by its ministry.
