Why Emerald Avenue Church of God? This isn’t just another church. It’s a story of faith and community. It’s a testament to perseverance.
Emerald Avenue Church of God’s journey began in 1935. The first church started at 47th and South Parkway. It was on the second floor. That same year, the congregation moved to 366 East 46th Street. Later, they moved to 214 East 50th Street. Elder Walter W. Naylor became the first pastor.
In 1939, the church found a location at 1122 West 61st Street. It was known as May Street Church. Elder Patrick Heard served as pastor from 1937 to 1943. Elder Eugene C. Johnson followed from 1944 to 1953. Dr. Marcus H. Morgan then led from 1953 to 1995.
A significant change occurred in 1970. The church moved to 10555 South Emerald Avenue. It was renamed Emerald Avenue Church of God. This marked a new chapter.
After 42 years of service, Pastor Morgan retired. Dr. Rev. E. Raymond Chin was elected pastor. He served from 1995 to 2019. In 2001, the church moved again. This time, it was to 10505 South Halsted Street. This fulfilled Pastor Morgan’s vision. The church was renamed Covenant Faith Church of God.
In 2019, Pastor Chin retired after 23 years. Rev. Lenell Jackson served as Interim Pastor. Rev. J. Tim Quainoo was installed in 2022. He served with his wife, Jillian Quainoo. They were the Senior Pastors of Covenant Faith Church of God until 2023.
Emerald Avenue Church of God believes in God’s word. It is revealed in the bible. The church helps people believe God has plans for them. Even when they cannot feel it. They believe God’s best is on the way.
The church’s beliefs are based on the Wesleyan Holiness Tradition. They understand God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They believe Jesus is the path to salvation. The Holy Spirit guides people to follow God’s designs. The bible reveals God’s character. It also shows faith journeys of people relating to God.
