A legacy etched in stone. That’s the Embassy of the United States in Quito. It stands as a silent witness to decades of diplomatic relations. The Embassy of the United States in Quito is much more than just a building. It represents a significant chapter in the history of US-Ecuadorian relations.

The first official US presence in Ecuador wasn’t in Quito. It began in Guayaquil in 1825. William Wheelwright became the first US Consul. Full diplomatic recognition of Ecuador as a separate nation came later in 1832. The first US diplomatic agent arrived in Quito in 1848. The mission’s status upgraded from a Legation to a full Embassy in 1942. Boaz Long became the first US Ambassador.

For a time the Embassy resided in Quito’s city center. This lasted until 2004. That year the United States purchased six hectares of land in northern Quito. A new and more secure embassy was needed. The cost of this new facility was substantial. Estimates reached $129 million. The old four-story embassy building was sold to Ecuador for $4.5 million. The new embassy’s design attracted attention. Architectural historian Jane C Loeffer described it as having a “prison-like look”. This was a reflection of increased security measures.

The Embassy wasn’t immune to political turbulence. In 2011 the Ecuadorian government declared US Ambassador Heather Hodges persona non grata. This followed the release of WikiLeaks cables. The cables contained allegations about Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa.

Today the Embassy of the United States in Quito continues its work. It remains a focal point for diplomatic efforts. It’s a symbol of the ongoing relationship between the United States and Ecuador. It’s a building with a story. A story etched into its very foundations. A story that continues to unfold.
