In 1825, a diplomatic bridge was built between Mexico and the United Kingdom. This bridge, the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Mexico City, has seen its share of moves and dramas. Let’s stand here, before its modern home in Torre del Angel on Paseo de la Reforma, and unravel its story. The Embassy of the United Kingdom wasn’t always located here. It first took root on Rio Lerma 71. In 1907, the hunt for a suitable location for the “House of the Legation” was a challenge. Sir Reginald Tower, the British minister at the time, knew the importance of a proper embassy. Finally, in 1910, land was acquired, and an English architect living in Mexico, Charles Grove Johnson, designed the new building. Imagine the grand opening, complete with onyx and marble, even a ballroom. President Porfirio Díaz himself expressed his admiration, marking it as the first legation owned and built by a foreign government in Mexico. The Embassy of the United Kingdom witnessed history unfold. It stood firm during the 1911 earthquake. It housed ministers like Sir Francis Stronge, who, despite pest infestations and missing furniture, appreciated his new home. The Mexican Revolution brought a period of broken relations, a silence in the halls of the embassy. But diplomacy, like a persistent vine, found its way back. Relations were restored, the embassy expanded, its role evolving. The 1985 and 2017 earthquakes tested its resilience. But the Embassy of the United Kingdom, a symbol of enduring ties, remained. However, the Rio Lerma building eventually bore the scars of time and tremors. In 2021, the embassy made its move to the Torre del Angel, a sleek, modern structure reflecting the evolving relationship between two nations. But the story doesn’t end there. More recent events, like the 2024 incident involving Ambassador Jon Benjamin, added another chapter to the embassy’s history, a reminder that diplomacy, while striving for peace, can also face unexpected turbulence. As we stand here, at the Embassy of the United Kingdom’s current location, we’re not just looking at a building. We’re looking at a living testament to the complexities, the challenges, and the enduring connections between two nations across an ocean.
