Nestled amidst the lush greenery at 1 Swiss Club Link, stands the Embassy of Switzerland. It’s more than just a building. It’s a bridge between two nations, a testament to a relationship that has blossomed over decades. The Embassy of Switzerland, as we see it today, wasn’t always here. Its story began humbly in March 1917, as an honorary consulate. World War I had thrown a wrench into Swiss businesses operating in Singapore. Trading restrictions and a lack of diplomatic representation created a challenging environment. So, the consulate was established, initially operating from the Singapore offices of Diethlem & Co. on Collyer Quay. One of its first tasks was managing a community fund to support struggling Swiss citizens in Singapore. The consulate later moved to Market Street and then to Union Building in Tanjong Pagar. During World War II, it even served as a refuge for those fleeing the conflict. The Embassy of Switzerland’s journey reflects Switzerland’s growing presence in Singapore. In 1960, the mission was formally upgraded to a consulate. Then, in 1967, it reached its current status as a full-fledged embassy. The current location at 1 Swiss Club Link was acquired in 1983. The land was leased for ninety-nine years, and the complex, with its administrative buildings, residences, and the main chancery, was completed between 1985 and 1987. Interestingly, the tropical climate takes its toll on the buildings, necessitating a reconstruction. A new complex, planned in 2021, is set to be completed by 2023. The Embassy of Switzerland stands as a symbol of the enduring bond between Switzerland and Singapore. It continues to play a vital role in facilitating diplomatic relations, fostering economic ties, and supporting Swiss citizens in Singapore.
