Considered one of Buenos Aires’ most beautiful buildings the Embassy of France stands as a testament to Franco-Argentine relations. The Embassy of France is more than just a diplomatic mission. It is a landmark with a rich history. We are standing in front of the Embassy of France.
The Embassy of France is located in the former Ortiz-Basualdo Palace. Daniel Ortiz-Basualdo and his wife Mercedes Zapiola Eastman commissioned the palace. They were a high-society couple who frequently traveled between Paris and Buenos Aires. They hired French architect Paul Pater to design it. Construction began in 1912.
Paul Pater was mobilized during World War I. His associate Eugenio Gant Ner took over the project. Ner completed the palace in 1918. The palace’s style is a blend of Louis XV architectural influences. It also features Asian decorations and English-style exterior designs.
In 1925, the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VIII, used the building as his official residence. After Daniel Basualdo’s death, the French government purchased the palace from his widow in 1939. They established their diplomatic representation here. The French Residence is located in San Isidro.
By the 1970s, the building had deteriorated. It was almost demolished. The French government intervened to preserve it. The Embassy of France retains its place in the city.
Inside, the Embassy of France reflects late 19th-century aristocracy. There are large wood panels and marble coverings. Furniture paintings and chandeliers were imported from Paris. These elements enhance its aesthetic appeal.
