Before 2007 Azerbaijani diplomatic relations with Mexico were conducted through their embassy in Washington DC. Mexico’s representation was handled by its embassy in Ankara Turkey. Think about that the sheer distance and the effort required to maintain diplomatic ties.
Our story begins even earlier. In May 1978 Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo visited Baku. This visit predates the formal establishment of diplomatic relations by over a decade. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the seeds of this current relationship planted long ago.
Another key event occurred in April 1982. Future Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev visited Mexico as head of a Soviet delegation. This meeting with Lopez Portillo is particularly interesting because at the time Aliyev was only a candidate of the Soviet Politburo. His future role as President highlights the importance of this early interaction.
