You are probably wondering why we are standing here in the village of Elphinstone. It’s a quiet place, isn’t it? But hidden in the nearby countryside, lies a fascinating story waiting to be uncovered. Today, it’s just a ruin, but once, Elphinstone Tower stood tall and proud.

The tower, built in the 13th century, used to be the home of the Elphinstone family. They were a powerful clan that held sway over these lands for centuries. Imagine the lives they lived within these walls. Were they brave knights, or cunning schemers? Did they feast in grand halls, or huddle by the fire in winter storms?

The Elphinstones’ reign was eventually overshadowed by another, more notorious family – the Hepburns. The 3rd Earl of Bothwell, a ruthless figure in Scottish history, had a troubled past. He was once accused of, among other things, kidnapping and imprisoning Mary Queen of Scots. What a story! Can you imagine the intrigue and drama that unfolded in this very place?

The tower is a testament to centuries of Scottish history. It has seen moments of great glory and terrible tragedy. In 1546, George Wishart, a Protestant reformer, was brought here by Bothwell. He was accused of heresy and burnt at the stake in St Andrews. The sight of this fiery ending must have chilled the hearts of everyone in the village.

Today, the tower is silent, its walls scarred by the passage of time. It’s a reminder that even the mightiest structures are bound to crumble in the end, and even the most powerful families fade into history. Still, the stories linger, waiting to be discovered by those who dare to listen.
