For over a century, from 1883, this site was a hive of activity, supplying limestone for Chicago and its surrounding areas. The Chicago Stone Company, a family-owned business, extracted limestone that went into building foundations, walls, roads, and even the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad roadbeds. But after decades of excavation, Elmhurst Quarry was reborn. In 1992, DuPage County made a visionary decision. They purchased the quarry, transforming it into a storm-water management facility. Today, Elmhurst Quarry holds a staggering 2.7 billion gallons of water. That’s enough to fill over 4,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools! This ingenious system helps protect Elmhurst from the devastating effects of flooding, a persistent challenge for the region.
