Slipping beneath the bustling Kashmir Road, the Elmdon Culvert whispers tales of Auckland’s hidden waterways. This isn’t just a tunnel; it’s a lifeline, a vital artery in the city’s circulatory system. Elmdon Culvert, measuring a substantial 1.8 meters in diameter and stretching 30 meters long, carries the weight of history and the flow of water beneath our feet. Its original purpose remains shrouded in mystery. Perhaps it facilitated residential development, or maybe it protected homes from the erosive forces of the stream it channels. Regardless, by March 2016, Elmdon Culvert was in dire straits. Years of wear and tear had taken their toll. Eroded ground support and a missing invert threatened the culvert’s stability, putting nearby homes at risk. Auckland Council faced a tough decision. A complete open-cut replacement was considered but ultimately rejected due to high costs, environmental concerns, and the inevitable disruption to local residents. Two other options remained: CIPP, a resin-impregnated liner, and GeoSpray, a geopolymer mortar solution. The council ultimately chose GeoSpray, a more environmentally friendly and less disruptive option. The project was a delicate dance of engineering and community engagement. Before any work began, the council consulted with local residents, ensuring their understanding and cooperation. Temporary fencing and access stairs were installed, and a bypass system was put in place to protect the stream’s delicate ecosystem. Then came the meticulous process of cleaning the culvert with high-pressure water blasting, reinstating the missing invert with concrete, and applying three coats of GeoSpray mortar. Each step required precision and care. Within seven days, the transformation was complete. Elmdon Culvert, once on the brink of collapse, was reborn, stronger and more resilient than ever. The project stands as a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of those involved, a quiet victory hidden beneath the pavement of Kashmir Road. Elmdon Culvert continues its silent service, a vital part of Auckland’s infrastructure.
