Thorvaldsen entered the Art Academy at age 11. He won all four of the institution’s medals. He stayed in Rome for over 40 years.

His works include statues of Christ and the twelve Apostles. These were for Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. Thorvaldsen’s Museum has a large collection of his works.

Hermann Ernst Freund was one of Thorvaldsen’s students. He created statuettes from Nordic mythology. Herman Wilhelm Bissen is remembered for his Realism. Jens Adolf Jerichau developed his own dynamic style.

Surrealism influenced Ejler Bille and Henry Heerup. Wilhelm Freddie took a sexual approach to Surrealism.

After World War II Danish sculpture was dominated by Spontaneism. Asger Jorn was in the forefront. Concretism developed from abstract geometrical art. Svend Wiig Hansen focused on the human body. Jörgen Haugen Sörensen explored abstract Expressionism.

Robert Jacobsen gained international recognition. Gunnar Aagaard Andersen developed socially-oriented sculpture.

In the 1960s Willy Örskov used everyday materials. Björn Nörgaard Hein Heinsen and Per Kirkeby experimented.

The 1970s showed interest in American-inspired installations. The Institut for Skalakunst was behind decorative works.

In the 1980s Post-Modernism returned to a classical approach. Henrik B. Andersen Morten Sträde and others were influenced by Willy Örskov.

Today young Danish artists seek inspiration abroad. Per Arnoldi Per Kirkeby and Olafur Eliasson have worked in the Copenhagen Opera House. Elisabeth Toubro completed Vanddragen in Aarhus. The Örestad development has seen monumental works.

The Ellipse Sculpture a modern piece. It continues this rich tradition of Danish sculpture. It offers its own unique statement.
