Established in 1877 Ellerslie School stands proudly. It’s one of Auckland’s oldest schools. Imagine the children who first walked through its doors. Mr Robert Graham’s petition in March 1877 started it all. He wanted a new school for the growing community. The first meeting was at the Ellerslie Hotel in May of that same year. Construction began in June. By November 12th 1877 the school opened. Mr Thomas Howells became the first principal in 1878. Two years later a four-roomed cottage became the staffroom.

The school quickly grew. By 1910 it needed another classroom. Overcrowding was a constant challenge. A separate infant department opened in 1914 to solve this. Modern drainage arrived in 1926. A dental clinic opened in 1930. Electric lighting was installed in 1936. New classrooms were built in 1941. The assembly hall was completed in 1956.

The playground expanded in 1955. It reached all the way to the Main Highway. A swimming pool was built in 1957. The school continued to grow and improve. New buildings and facilities were added. This included a caretaking shed new toilets and furniture storage. The school continued to grow. It added more classrooms and a new playground. The school also created a volunteer program to support its events and projects.

Ellerslie School has a rich history. It’s a testament to the dedication of its staff students and community. The school continues to educate and grow. It’s a place where children learn and thrive. It remains a vital part of the Ellerslie community.
