Picture the majestic Ellenrieder-Gymnasium before you. Its imposing facade stands proudly in Konstanz Germany. This isn’t just a school it’s a living testament to history. The Ellenrieder-Gymnasium’s roots stretch back to 1877. It began as a Higher Girls’ School. A far cry from the co-educational institution we see today.

Initially housed in the city center the school moved to its current location in the Paradies district in 1911. The Art Nouveau building designed by Paul Jordan is a stunning example of early 20th-century architecture. Its three stories feature a curved gable and a grand double staircase. Imagine the students rushing up those stairs. Each one carrying the weight of expectations and dreams.

The school wasn’t always called the Ellenrieder-Gymnasium. It was once known as the Friedrich-Luisen-Schule. In 1961 however it was renamed. This happened thanks to Hermann Venedey’s suggestion. He wanted to honor the renowned local painter Marie Ellenrieder. It’s a fascinating detail. A small acknowledgment to a significant female artist.

The Ellenrieder-Gymnasium has seen its share of ups and downs. Student numbers fluctuated. From approximately 700 in the early 1980s. They dropped to 361 by the mid-1990s. However the introduction of new programs like a bilingual English branch boosted enrollment. Now the school boasts 900 to 1000 students. This necessitated expansions. Two new buildings were constructed in 2008 and 2012. A new sports hall was added in 2011. Shared with a neighboring elementary school.

Notable alumni further enhance the school’s prestige. Among them are Hildegard Hamm-Brücher a prominent politician. Bettina Bernadotte a businesswoman linked to Mainau Island. And Tim Lienhard a well-known television journalist. Their success reflects the high standards of education at the Ellenrieder-Gymnasium.

So here we stand before the Ellenrieder-Gymnasium. A place of learning and growth a landmark that whispers stories of Konstanz’s past. A testament to the enduring power of education.
