“Racist and sexist teachers?” a disgruntled former student once claimed. Today we stand before Ellebjerg Skole. This school has garnered both praise and criticism over the years.

Ellebjerg Skole is a Danish folkeskole in Sydhavnen, Copenhagen. It is located at P. Knudsens Gade 37. The school serves students from børnehaveklassen to 9th grade. That is from ages 5-6 to around 15 years old.

Ellebjerg Skole’s story begins in the 1950s. The Copenhagen municipality built it. Povl Baumann designed the school. He added another gem to his projects for Copenhagen.

But long before Ellebjerg Skole stood here, there was another school nearby. The first school in Kongens Enghave was private. Frederiksholms Teglværk created it for its workers’ children. It was in a wing of the former farm “Larsens Minde”. It operated until the brickyard closed in 1918. It continued as a temporary municipal school until 1930.

Ellebjerg Skole was celebrated as modern and beautiful in 1950. There was a big party on P. Knudsens Gade for the opening.

In 2000, Copenhagen municipality established the current Ellebjerg Skole. It aims to educate students from børnehaveklassen to 9th grade.

Ellebjerg Skole has faced scrutiny and acclaim. Online reviews show mixed opinions. One person called it “Københavns bedste folkeskole!” Another described “dårlig skole”.

Ellebjerg Skole has about 528 students. The school focuses on social and academic well-being. It also measures teaching effectiveness and the learning environment.
