Picture Sarah Swinborn a visionary woman. She founded the Elizabeth Fry Retreat in 1883. It wasn’t always here on Argo Street. It began its life at 25 Lang Street in Prahran. The Elizabeth Fry Retreat was a haven. It offered hope to women released from prison.

The Retreat provided more than just shelter. It offered training in domestic skills. It provided religious education. It helped women find employment. Initially it focused on older women. The move to 32 Albion Street in 1884 marked an expansion. A further relocation to Argo Street in 1885 proved pivotal.

New buildings were constructed in 1914. This marked a new chapter for the Elizabeth Fry Retreat. The larger space allowed for a significant laundry. The Retreat became renowned for its laundry services. A handcart was a familiar sight. It collected and delivered laundry throughout the streets of Prahran. This is a little-known fact about the Retreat’s impact on the community.

The Retreat operated until 1943. The Melbourne City Mission then took over its work. They continued the Retreat’s vital services until 1957. The site later became Argo Street Reserve. A fountain named the Swinborn Fountain stands there today. It’s a fitting tribute to Sarah Swinborn’s legacy.

The Elizabeth Fry Retreat represents more than just a building. It symbolises hope resilience and the transformative power of community support. It’s a poignant reminder of the women it served and the enduring need for such services. This humble location tells a powerful story of compassion and social change. Reflect on the lives touched by this significant institution. Its legacy continues to inspire.
