This sanctuary, a quiet space for reflection, honors Eleanor Dare, a member of the ill-fated Roanoke Colony. Imagine, if you will, the year 1587. Eleanor, heavily pregnant, arrives on Roanoke Island with her husband and fellow colonists, filled with the hope of a new life. Weeks later, she gives birth to a daughter – Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World. This joyous occasion was, however, overshadowed by the harsh realities of colonial life. Supplies dwindled, tensions with native tribes grew, and Eleanor’s father, John White, the colony’s governor, reluctantly sailed back to England for much-needed aid. He was never to see his daughter or granddaughter again. When he returned, the colony had vanished, leaving behind only the word “Croatoan” carved onto a post – a mystery that endures to this day.
