The year is 1889. A small, determined group of African Americans in Dallas gathered to build their own sanctuary, a beacon of hope and faith. This was the birth of Elizabeth Chapel CME Church. Elizabeth Chapel CME Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a symbol of resilience, built by a community newly freed from slavery, yearning for their own space. They erected the church at 1026 E 10th Street, a testament to their spirit. Elizabeth Chapel CME Church quickly became the heart of the vibrant African-American community in the Tenth Street Historic District. It was a place where lives intertwined, stories were shared, and hope was rekindled. Now, imagine the year 1910. The original wooden structure, though filled with memories, was showing the passage of time. They decided to rebuild, using timber from the original chapel, a beautiful act of preserving history while forging ahead. A new Elizabeth Chapel CME Church rose, this time in the Gothic Revival style, its architecture a testament to their enduring faith. Sadly, Elizabeth Chapel CME Church met an unfortunate end in 1996. The changing dynamics of the neighborhood led to its closure, and it was ultimately demolished. Though the physical structure is gone, the spirit of Elizabeth Chapel CME Church, its legacy of resilience, faith, and community, continues to resonate within the heart of Dallas.
