Established in 1991 the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule initially operated in temporary quarters in Bonn-Röttgen. A short two years later it moved to its permanent home in Bad Godesberg. This building previously housed the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium. The Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule isn’t just any school. It’s a comprehensive school offering a unique educational journey.
From its humble beginnings the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule has grown significantly. In the 2010-2011 school year it boasted an impressive 1120 students. This demonstrates the school’s importance to the community. The school prides itself on inclusive learning. Students learn together until the 10th grade. This integrated approach ensures that no one is left behind.
A remarkable story unfolded concerning accessibility at the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule. Parents initiated a citizen’s petition. This led to the installation of an elevator. This simple act now allows wheelchair-using students to access all classrooms. Even those on the upper floors are now accessible.
The Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule offers a wide range of subjects. Beyond mandatory English students can choose from French Latin and Spanish. This enriching curriculum ensures well-rounded students. In 2001 the school adopted a 60-minute lesson schedule. This change aimed to improve the learning environment. It provided more time for independent study and skill development.
The Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule is more than just academics. The school houses a music school with an impressive orchestra. Since 1998 the music school has helped over 800 children learn instruments. This extensive program even provides instruments to students at a low cost. The orchestra performs about 50 times a year. This exposes students to various stages and audiences. The Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule has also actively participated in theatre and opera projects. Students have performed Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on the stage of the Bonn Opera House. They have collaborated with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and other renowned ensembles.
In 2011 the school was officially renamed the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gesamtschule. This honors Elisabeth Selbert one of the Mothers of the German Basic Law. The school’s commitment to inclusion and excellence is truly inspiring. It has received several awards including the “School without Racism – School with Courage” award.
