Founded in 1928 Elim Church Assembly of God stands as a testament to faith. It’s the oldest Assemblies of God church in Singapore. This very spot on Serangoon Road has witnessed incredible growth. It began as a small gathering of Christians. Rev Cecil and Mrs Edith Jackson pastored this burgeoning church.

Imagine the scene in 1937. Rev and Mrs Lawrence McKinney arrived. They embarked on a remarkable journey. They sought a permanent home for their growing congregation. After months of prayer they found a bungalow. It was nestled at 1079 Serangoon Road. Surrounded by lush trees it reminded Rev McKinney of Elim. This is the biblical place where the Israelites rested after their exodus from Egypt. He named the church Elim Church Assembly of God. A dedication service was held on October 20 1939.

The Second World War tested the church’s resilience. During the Japanese Occupation lay leaders stepped up. Lye Eng Hong Victor Manny Arthur P Abeysekera and Yeo Bock Hoe kept the faith alive. They maintained services throughout the tumultuous period.

Post-war the church saw a succession of dedicated pastors. Rev Alfred A McGrew Rev R B and Mrs Avalone Cavaness and others guided the church’s growth. A new sanctuary was built. It was dedicated in 1973 exactly 34 years after the original church. The church expanded adding Chinese and Tamil services.

Rev Dr Fred and Margaret Seaward further propelled Elim’s mission. They focused on church planting and supporting missionary work. A new building project culminated in a new sanctuary in 2002. Today Rev Glen Lim Cheng Huat leads Elim Church Assembly of God. He continues the legacy of faith service and community.
