Sadly, Elim Christian College has also faced tragedy. On April 15, 2008, a flash flood occurred. It took the lives of six students and a teacher. They were canyoning in the Mangatepopo Stream. This event deeply affected the school.
In 2011, Principal Murray Burton received a New Zealand Order of Merit. This was for his leadership during that difficult time. The teacher and one of the students who died also received bravery medals.
