Ever heard of a recording studio that refuses royalties? That’s Electrical Audio in Chicago. This isn’t just any studio. It’s a legendary space founded in 1997 by Steve Albini a musician and recording engineer. Hundreds of independent music projects have found their home here.

Electrical Audio’s story is one of analog defiance in a digital world. While digital recording boomed Albini stuck to analog. Think mixing consoles tape recorders and outboard sound effects. The rooms themselves are designed to provide natural reverb eliminating post-production enhancements.

Even more unusual is Albini’s unique business model. He famously refuses royalties from the musicians who record at his studio. He views his role as a technician not a partner in the artistic process. His belief? The band writes the music plays the music and deserves the profits. This approach is as much a part of Electrical Audio’s legacy as the music created within its walls.

Electrical Audio isn’t just one room. It’s two studios A and B each with their own character. Studio A the larger boasts three performance rooms Center Field Alcatraz and Kentucky each designed with specific acoustic properties. Studio B is smaller but no less impressive featuring a large live room and an isolation room. Both studios were created by extensively remodeling an existing building incorporating even adobe bricks shipped from New Mexico.

But the story doesn’t end there. While Albini is famously against digital recording a Pro Tools system eventually found its way into Electrical Audio. The studio’s technician Greg Norman revealed this. Albini however remains committed to analog recording. Don’t even think about asking him about Pro Tools.

Electrical Audio is more than a recording facility. It’s a testament to artistic integrity a commitment to analog sound and a unique business model. It’s a Chicago landmark a place where musical history continues to be made one analog track at a time. This is Electrical Audio.
