El Genoma Humano also called Soberonita stands tall. It is a 17-meter-high iron sculpture. Sebastian created it in 2005. Its vibrant acrylic enamel finish catches the Mexican sun. It is located on the explanada of the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica.
But what is the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica or Inmegen? It is Mexico’s National Institute of Genomic Medicine. The institute is dedicated to genomic research. It seeks to understand the genetic factors affecting Mexican health.
Inmegen’s story began in the late 1990s. Experts discussed genomic medicine’s potential impact on the Mexican population. By 1999, over one hundred experts set goals for this field.
In 2001, key institutions joined forces. The National Autonomous University of Mexico and others formed a consortium. They aimed to create an institute for advanced genomic research.
President Vicente Fox Quesada authorized Inmegen’s creation on July 19, 2004. It became the eleventh National Institute of Health. Initially, Cuernavaca was considered for its location. However, it was first housed in the Torre Zafiro II in Mexico City. In 2012, Inmegen moved to its permanent home in Tlalpan. President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa inaugurated the new facilities.
