El-Bethel Baptist Church

In August 1930, a small group of believers gathered in Chicago. They laid the foundation for what would become El-Bethel Baptist Church. Rev. S.P. Hathman led this dedicated group of fourteen charter members. The church’s name, El-Bethel, was chosen by Sis. Fannie Robertson. She said it meant “God is in this place.” El-Bethel Baptist Church quickly became a spiritual home for many. Just a year later, in 1931, the church acquired its own property. Under the leadership of Rev. L.W. Wallace, the building underwent its first remodel. Subsequent renovations took place during the tenures of Rev. H.W. Evans and Rev. J.L. Lewis. The church’s current edifice was built under Rev. J.L. Lewis, with the cornerstone laid on December 8, 1944. In 1949, Rev. Albin Hurd became the pastor of El-Bethel Baptist Church. His 28-year leadership saw significant spiritual and financial growth. Numerous improvements were made to the church building. New pews, pulpit furniture, water fountains, a lighting system, and an organ were installed. A church van was purchased. An educational building and a dining room were added. The church also embraced the tithing program. This allowed them to install central heating and air conditioning. After Rev. Hurd’s passing in 1976, Rev. Samuel B. Ealy Jr. took the helm. During his eight years of service, the church acquired a new piano and renovated the educational building. The main sanctuary was also updated with paneling, carpeting, and new furniture. Following Rev. Ealy’s resignation, Rev. James Coleman led El-Bethel Baptist Church. His tenure saw the formation of a youth church and a drill team. The church also purchased a new organ. After Rev. Coleman’s resignation in 1999, Rev. Robert McKenzie led the congregation. He introduced the Singles Ministry and the Married Couples Ministry. He revitalized the Sunday school program. Four new ministers joined El-Bethel Baptist Church during his time: Bro. Willie Earl Hawkins, Bro. James Von Hawkins, Bro. Richard Cooks, and Bro. Derrick Wilson. Rev. C.O. Preston succeeded Rev. McKenzie but resigned after five years. El-Bethel Baptist Church’s legacy continues under the leadership of Pastor Justin R. Barker Sr. since 2012. The church has experienced remarkable growth. Many new ministries and programs have been introduced.
