“A giant blue anchor in the middle of Mexico City? Really?” someone might ask. Yes, indeed. This is El Ancla. It’s a monumental sculpture. Swiss artist Willi Gutmann created it. It’s a key piece of the Ruta de la Amistad. That means Friendship Route.

El Ancla stands tall at 7.5 meters. That’s about 25 feet. It’s made of concrete over a steel frame. Gutmann built it in 1968 for the Olympics. The Olympics were held right here in Mexico City.

Originally, El Ancla sported purple and green colors. But the city changed. Gutmann felt the sculpture needed to change too. In 1997, he repainted it blue. This electric blue helps it fit better. It complements the modern buildings around it.

The Association of Swiss Businessmen in Mexico helped. They supported Gutmann’s restoration project. The Swiss Embassy also lent a hand.

For many years, El Ancla stood near Avenida Luis Cabrera. Then, in 2008, things changed. The city expanded the Periférico highway. The sculpture had to move. Its new home is the Periférico / Insurgentes cloverleaf. This spot makes it even more visible. Now, more people can see El Ancla. It has become a true landmark.

El Ancla isn’t just a pretty sculpture. It represents Switzerland. It was Station 2 on the Ruta de la Amistad. The route featured 19 sculptures. Artists from all over the world created them. They all came together for the 1968 Olympics.

The sculpture looks like a large letter G. A smaller hooked piece runs through it. It’s abstract but striking.

Over time, El Ancla suffered neglect. After the Olympics, it was somewhat forgotten. The 1997 restoration saved it. Gutmann’s vision lives on.

Think about the traffic swirling around El Ancla. Cars zoom by day and night. Yet, the sculpture stands still. It’s a constant in a changing world. It reminds us of the Olympics. It celebrates international friendship. It shows how art can transform a city. El Ancla is more than just an anchor. It’s a symbol. It symbolizes Mexico City’s spirit and its connection to the world. It’s a landmark that captures the essence of the Ruta de la Amistad.
