Envision the year 1888. That was when the Eisgrubschule first opened its doors right here in the heart of Mainz’s Altstadt.
The Eisgrubschule has been a cornerstone of this community for many decades. It has been a place where countless children have taken their first steps in education. This is more than just a school. It is a symbol of learning and growth.
Originally, the Eisgrubschule was established as a standard primary school. Over time, it has evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and the community. In fact, from 2013 to 2014, the beautiful historical building underwent extensive renovations. The goal was to bring it up to modern standards. This ensured that students have access to the best possible learning environment.
Currently, around 250 children attend the Eisgrubschule. The Eisgrubschule operates as a “Volle Halbtagsschule”. This means that students attend classes from 8:00 am to either 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm. However, the learning day doesn’t necessarily end there.
The Förderverein, or the school’s support association, provides care until 4:00 pm right here in the school building. For families needing even longer care, options are available until 5:00 pm. These are offered by the “Hort Freiligrathstraße” and “Kita und Hort Zeughausgasse”. The latter was formerly known as Haus der Jugend.
Looking ahead, there are exciting plans for the Eisgrubschule. These include a new building, expansion, and further renovations. The need for full-day care for primary school students is growing. By the school year 2026 and 2027, there will be a legal entitlement to it. This has implications for the Eisgrubschule.
Studies have shown the need to expand the school. However, a complete four-class per grade setup is not feasible. The school authority reassessed and determined that 3.5 classes per grade will be sufficient. The GWM is developing a concept to implement this.
The planned improvements will occur in four phases. First, a cafeteria will be installed. Second, a new two-story building could be built along the Großen Weißgasse. This would add 200 square meters of space. A multipurpose room could be located here later. Third, the attic of the annex building could be raised. This will create more classrooms. Finally, space will be redistributed in the main building. Containers will be used as temporary solutions. This ensures school operations continue during construction.
The Eisgrubschule remains committed to providing a nurturing environment. A place where children can learn, grow, and thrive. It stands as a testament to the power of education and the importance of community.
