EinKlang Anröchter Grünstein is more than just an art piece. It is a testament to the enduring beauty of natural stone. The installation uses Anröchter Grünstein. This stone has a fascinating story of its own.
Anröchter Grünstein is often called Anröchter Dolomit. But this is incorrect. There are actually two types of this natural stone. One is green. It is called Grünstein or greensandstone. The other is bluish. It is called Anröchter Blau. Both are limestone. They come from the Soester Börde region. These stones date back to the Upper Cretaceous period.
Locals called it greensandstone. This name was for any hardened green-tinted sand. However, Anröchter Stein has very few sand grains. It is more accurate to call it sandy limestone. Near Soest, the stone deposits are 20 to 25 meters thick. Near Rüthen, they are only 3 to 4 meters thick. The deposits near Anröchte and Klieve are east of Soest. Seven quarries are currently active there.
The green bank is especially popular. The term “Grünsandstein” is not geologically correct. It is limestone with only a small amount of quartz. Since 2008, it is now called Anröchter Stein. This change reduces confusion about its name and color. The stone shows dolomitic textures. It has also been called glauconitic sand limestone. It has also been called glauconitic sandstone.
Anröchter Stein contains about 64 percent carbonate. This includes 33 percent carbonate clasts. It also contains 21 percent glauconite. Quartz makes up about 31 percent. The remaining 5 percent is rock debris and mica. Glauconite is a weathering mineral. It gives the stone its green or bluish color. The stone formed on the seabed of the Upper Cretaceous sea. This was in shallow water. The climate was warm. Fossils of shells, snails, sea urchins, sponges, and plants remain. Gray and dark gray shell fragments are still visible. They can be up to 3 cm long.
Grünstein is relatively soft. It is vulnerable to weathering and industrial emissions. This is due to its high lime content. Weathering breaks down the calcareous binder. It also affects the glauconite. This stone is especially at risk in base areas. Winter road salt can cause scaling.
Historically, Anröchter Stein was used in many buildings. Examples include St. Maria zur Wiese church in Soest. It was also used in churches in Anröchte and Erwitte from the 12th century. Churches in Lippstadt also used it. The largest structure made of this stone is the Soest city wall. Anröchter Stein has been used in northern Germany for centuries. It is used for facades, floors, stairs, windowsills, and fireplaces. It is also used for rustic masonry and stone carving. When installed correctly, Anröchter Stein is suitable for outdoor use. It is frost-resistant. But it is not resistant to road salt.
