Founded in 2001 by Alcio Braz Eido Soho-sensei Eininji is more than just a Zen Buddhist temple. It’s a haven of peace nestled in Copacabana at the foot of Pavão-Pavãozinho favela. Eininji – the Eternal Loving Care Temple – embodies compassion. It welcomes all regardless of background. This includes the LGBTQIA+ community. A project specifically designed for them offers support and a safe space.
Eininji’s location is significant. It sits at the entrance of a favela. This area has seen armed violence. Yet the temple remained. It offers bodhisattva training bearing witness to the neighborhood’s struggles. This commitment to staying even amidst hardship reflects the Three Tenets of Not-Knowing Witnessing and Engaged Action.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges. Eininji closed its doors. The Sangha continued practicing virtually. They provided empathic listening to frontline workers.
