A grand ballroom, echoing with the laughter of Melbourne’s elite. That’s what once graced this very spot where we stand before Eildon Mansion. Now, you might be picturing a lavish party hosted by John Lang Currie, the pastoralist who expanded this mansion and gave it the name ‘Eildon’ in 1877. And you wouldn’t be wrong! But this ballroom witnessed more than just society gatherings. It saw the joyous wedding celebration of Henrietta, Currie’s own daughter. Imagine the swirling gowns, the scent of gardenias, the clinking of champagne glasses celebrating a love story unfolding within these very walls. Now, Eildon Mansion wasn’t always this grand. It started its life around 1850 as Barham House, a much smaller but still elegant Regency style home built for Edward Bernard Green. But when John Currie, at the height of his success, bought the property in 1869, he envisioned something more. He brought in the renowned architects Reed & Barnes, known for their work on Melbourne landmarks like the Royal Exhibition Building, to reshape Barham House into the sprawling Eildon Mansion we see today. Over the years, Eildon Mansion has seen many transformations. It’s been a guesthouse, a boarding house, even a haven for backpackers seeking adventure. In 2006, the Alliance Française breathed new life into Eildon Mansion, making it their Melbourne headquarters. They carefully restored its grandeur, removing partitions to reveal those grand rooms once more. Though it’s changed hands again since then, the legacy of elegance and transformation continues to echo through Eildon Mansion’s halls.
